『招待』｜オライア・マウンテン・ドリーマー
1994年の春にカナダの作家オライア・マウンテン・ドリーマーが『招待』という詩を発表しました。作者の解説によると（※1）表面的な世間話ばかりで虚しさを感じていた時に書いた詩だそうで、共感できる人も多いのではないでしょうか。
この詩では、傷つきやすさ、嘘偽りのない繋がり、勇気、感謝、喜びといったテーマを探求し、人生の課題や自分自身と向き合うことについて、私たちに語りかけています。

招待
あなたが生活の為にどんな仕事をしているかは、どうでもいいことです。
私は、あなたが何に憧れ、どんな夢に挑戦するのか知りたいと思います。
あなたが何歳なのかということも、関心ありません。あなたが、愛や夢、生きているという冒険の為に
どれだけ自分を賭ける事ができるか知りたいのです。
あなたがどの星座の生まれかということも、どうでもいいことです。あなたが本当に深い悲しみを知っているか、人生の裏切りにさらされたことがあるか。
それによって傷つくことを恐れ、心を閉ざしてしまっていないかを知りたいのです。
あなたが自分の痛みであれ、他人の痛みであれ、それを無視したり、
ごまかしたり、なかったことにせず、受け止めることができるか知りたいのです。
喜びの時は、それが私のものであれ、あなたのものであれ、心から喜び、夢中になって踊り、恍惚感に全身をゆだねることができるかどうかを知りたいのです。
気をつけろとか、現実的になれとか、たいしたことないなどと言わずに。私は、あなたの話すことが本当かどうかには 関心がありません。
私は、あなたが自分自身に正直であるために、
他人を 失望させることでさえあえてすることができるかどうかを知りたいのです。
たとえ裏切りだと責められても、 自分自身の魂を裏切るよりは、その非難に耐えうる方を選ぶことができるかどうかを。
たとえ不実だと言われても、そんな時にあなたがどうするかによって、
あなたという人が信頼に値するかどうかを知りたいのです。
私は、あなたがきれいだけではない日常から美しさを見出せるかどうか、そしてその存在から自分の人生を紡ぎだすことができるかを知りたいのです。
私は、あなたや私がたとえ失敗しても、それを受け止めてともに生きることができるか、湖の縁に立ち、銀色に輝く満月に向かって『イエス』と叫ぶことができるかどうかを知りたいのです。
あなたがどこに住んでいるか、どれだけお金があるかはどうでもいいことです。
それよりも、あなたが悲しみと絶望に打ちひしがれ、どんなに疲れ果てていても、
また朝がくれば起きあがり、子どもたちを食べさせるために、
しなければならないことをするかどうかを知りたいのです。
あなたが誰を知っているか、あなたがどうしてここへ来たかは関係ありません。私とともに決してひるまずに
炎の中に立つことができるかどうかが知りたいのです。
あなたがどこで、何を、誰と勉強したかはどうでもいいことです。
私が知りたいのは、誰もいなくなりたったひとりになった時、
あなたの内側からあなたを支えるものは何かということです。
私はあなたが自分自身と向き合い、その何もない時間の中にいる自分を、
心から愛しているのかどうかを知りたいと思っているのです。

It doesn't interest me
what you do for a living.
I want to knowwhat you ache for
and if you dare to dream
of meeting your hear's longing.
It doesn’t interest me
how old you are.
I want to know
if you will risk
looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me
what planets are
squaring your moon...
I want to know
if you have touched
the centre of your own sorrow
if you have been opened
by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.
I want to know
if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.
I want to know
if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you
to the tips of your fingers and toes
without cautioning us
to be careful
to be realistic
to remember the limitations
of being human.
It doesn’t interest me
if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear
the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.
I want to know
if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”
It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live
or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me
who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me
where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know
what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.
I want to know
if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like
the company you keep
in the empty moments.
